Rotating Moebius Strip is the latest LEGO automaton from the legendary Japanese builder Akiyuki, and it is pure mechanical poetry. Inside a large black diamond-shaped frame, a ring made of dozens of identical hinged links twists on itself to form a Möbius strip, the famous one-sided loop with a single half-twist. Driven by a motor unit at the top of the frame and guided by spoked wheels on each side and a pair of rubber rollers at the bottom, the whole ring glides endlessly along its own length. Each link can tilt by 3.75 degrees relative to its neighbour, which is exactly what allows a rigid LEGO chain to follow such a smooth, continuous curve. The colored links, shading from yellow to orange and deep red on one stretch and from pale blue to dark blue on another, make the magic visible: watch them travel along the strip and come back on the opposite face without ever leaving the surface. This kinetic sculpture is as hypnotic as it is ingenious, a perfect blend of mathematics, motion and LEGO engineering.
